Dear John,
As we approach the end of 2023, I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey we've been on together. Eight years ago, I stood in a classroom, never imagining the twists and turns that would lead me here today as your State Senator.
Our strides over the past year have been nothing short of historic. Remember when we dared to believe that we could shift the trajectory of our state, challenging decades of Republican control? We not only believed it, but we made it a reality.
In our first hundred days alone, we accomplished significant milestones:
- We rolled back the unfair pension tax.
- Expanded the Working Families Tax Credit to support those who need it most.
- Took a monumental step forward by amending the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act to protect LGBTQ+ Michiganders from discrimination.
- Repealed archaic laws like the 1931 abortion ban.
- Reformed gun laws for the safety of all Michiganders.
- Proudly repealed the so-called Right to Work legislation, strengthening unions and empowering workers.

As chair of the Education budget, I was especially proud of the historic progressive budget that was signed into law. We implemented common sense changes like ensuring free breakfast and lunch for all kids, and piloted an equitable funding model that targets the students and districts who need it most.
This year has been a testament to real change, uplifting working families across Downriver and Western Wayne County. And we're just getting started. As we look ahead to 2024, the momentum is with us. But to continue this progress, I need your support. Your contributions make a tangible difference in securing a brighter future for Michigan.
