As we close out 2023, I want to thank the residents of the 12th congressional district for believing in me and sending me to Congress to do the people’s work.
To kick off 2023, we opened three Neighborhood Service Centers in Detroit, Inkster, and Southfield. Over the last 5 years, our Neighborhood Service Centers have helped return more than $5.5 million in constituent services directly back into the hands of 8,000 residents.
Through legislation passed in Congress, we’ve secured tens of millions of dollars for our district while introducing 160 bills and amendments―39 of which have successfully passed the House.
This year we also celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Congressional Mamas’ Caucus, which is committed to advocating for working mothers and their families on issues of affordable childcare, paid family leave, Black maternal health, and economic justice. And we continued the critical work of the Get The Lead Out Caucus that I co-founded, which is dedicated to securing clean, affordable water for everyone.
We’ve hosted over 120 events including coffee hours, town halls, resource fairs, and more. This is part of remaining rooted in community―hearing from residents advocating for clean water, clean air, utilities for all, housing for all, and so much more.
The residents of the 12th district sent me to Congress to help our families get through everyday challenges. That’s why with every bill I draft and every resolution I introduce, it’s done in partnership with members of our community, from replacing lead pipes and demanding clean air and water as a human right, to supporting workers’ rights and keeping people in their homes.
Even as we advocate for policies that support marginalized people, there are forces that seek to maintain the unjust status quo and take me down. Already this year, we’re seeing attack ads and attempts to manipulate my record of advocating for our residents and all vulnerable people.
