We make a pretty big fuss about the end-of-year fundraising deadline in the political world. Personally, I feel like an archaeologist just trying to dig my way out of the solicitations in my own inbox—so I can imagine what yours probably looks like.
But I know that, with New Year’s Eve coming up tomorrow, a lot of folks aren’t checking their email super regularly, so I just wanted to make sure I caught you so I could explain why our deadline tomorrow night matters so much for us.
This is where we are: at the beginning of the week, I set a pretty ambitious goal. If you caught yesterday’s email, you’ll recall that I based that on my best, most educated guess of where we need to be to have a successful 2024.
If we don’t hit that goal, sure, the world won’t end and the sky won’t fall. But falling short would mean that we aren’t going to have as much capacity to respond to our opponents’ attacks, and we won’t be as ready as we could be to fight hard and flip this seat in November. In a state like ours, where it seems like every statewide election comes down right to the wire, the difference between hitting our marks and falling just short really could change our outcome next year.
And because this is a reporting deadline, where we have to give a public account of everything we raised and spent to the State Board of Elections, it also means that if we do fall short, the GOP is going to see it and smell the blood in the water.
Maybe this goal is a stretch—especially in a campaign for an office like Treasurer, where we know we’re going to struggle to hold people’s attention compared to the Gubernatorial and Presidential races. But I really believe we can make it where we need to be. We’re well underway to that goal, and we just need to keep up the momentum we’ve already got if we want to reach the finish line.
Because John, this is the power of the movement we’ve built.
To stay on track, we still need to raise just about $10,000 before the end of the year.
If everyone who reads this email—not even everyone I send it to, just everyone who actually opens and reads this far—contributes just $25, we’ll blow right past our end-of-year goal several times over. Granted, I can’t predict in advance how many people will actually read this (I’m just making my best, most educated guess), but this one would really have to flop for that not to be true.
