Dear John,
Sometimes I’m asked “what are we saving the Boundary Waters from?” You obviously know the answer to this one - the dire threat of copper mining along the pristine waterways flowing into and through the very heart of the Wilderness.
Just as important a question is, “ Who are we protecting the Boundary Waters for ?”
My answer includes my kids and my Grandpa Ray – who introduced my family to this Wilderness decades ago. For the people of Ely and other Wilderness-edge communities. For the Anishinaabe people who have called this region home since time immemorial. For people from all over the country (and all over the world) who come to this paradise of woods and water. For the wildlife that live here. For the freshwater and boreal forests that help sustain our overstressed planet. For our kids and grandkids.
That’s why we need your support today. Your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar until midnight on December 31 [[link removed]] and help us defend the Boundary Waters by growing a movement that introduces and welcomes everyone to this special place. [link removed] [[link removed]]

We must ask ourselves, “Who are we saving the Boundary Waters with ?” Because we need to make sure, now and for the future of conservation, that everybody who is invested in and loves this place becomes part of this conservation movement.
We are fortunate to have many wonderful camps and access programs in our region and across the country that provide outdoor experiences for people who might otherwise not have that chance. We enthusiastically connect with those groups, including Outward Bound, Scouts, Y Camps, Big City Mountaineers and others, and work with them to address the sometimes significant barriers that people have to accessing outdoor recreation or going on Boundary Waters trips. Those barriers can be economic, ability, or how welcome and safe they may feel where they’re going.
We partner with these groups in meaningful ways - supporting their programs and participants and connecting them with our advocacy to together build this conservation movement for the future.
In 2023, we supported 11 different trips and projects through our Wilderness Equity Initiative mini-grants program. These ranged from day trips to winter camp retreats to films and podcasts and are connecting people from a variety of backgrounds to the Boundary Waters and our shared mission to protect it.
