Why Support Independent?
Legend says that Saint Patrick cast out all snakes from Ireland after they attacked him during a 40-day fast he was conducting. Today, while not a single snake can be found there, many believe that the story may actually refer to Patrick’s courageous and highly effective crusade to rid Ireland of slavers and tax collectors and to establish thriving farming and business communities across the country.

Here at the Independent Institute, and especially now with the further magnitude of the coronavirus pandemic, we too are exposing and working to cast out our own snakes. Every three months, our California Golden Fleece® Awards, founded and directed by Dr. Lawrence McQuillan, highlight a state or local government spending program, tax, or regulation that fleeces taxpayers, consumers, or businesses.Â
Our most recent award went to California state and local politicians, government planners, regulators, and activists for inept housing policies. As we all know, California has become the national poster child for high housing costs and homelessness, and the coronavirus outbreak will likely only make a bad situation worse. A complex array of regulatory obstacles enacted by politicians at various levels of government and pushed by special interests over the decades have made California ill-equipped to accommodate the state’s growth.
