If you feel overwhelmed right now, you’re not alone. So many of us are feeling anxious about our health and the health of people close to us.
We really hope that you’re doing okay, that you’re well in body and mind, and that your friends and family are well, and being looked after if they're not. We are thinking of you and sending solidarity.
The coronavirus crisis shows how incredibly important public services are - our NHS, our care workers, the safety net of a welfare state that catches people when they fall, information we can rely on. The cracks of the system are being revealed, and it’s alarming.
Public services are being called to the rescue, proving their necessity, while private companies are looking to profit from this crisis, from pharmaceuticals to private hospitals.
We Own It is about public services for people not profit. Like millions of people all over this country, we believe that human life is more important than making a quick buck.
Right now we’re thinking hard about how best we can campaign during this crisis and beyond it, to make our NHS and all our public services stronger for the future.
We’ll fight for our vital public services with everything we’ve got, from our bedrooms and our living rooms and our kitchens, on skype and on zoom, in solidarity with the people on the frontline, and while looking after each other.
This government has asked us to look after each other, and we will. And in exchange, we want an end to the devastating austerity that has damaged our public services, and an end to outsourcing and selling them off.
We’ll be in touch soon to let you know how we're going to be campaigning in response to this crisis. If you are well and able, we’d love to campaign with you remotely to fight for better public services as things unfold.
In the meantime here’s a quote from the Spirit of 45, an excellent film which makes good watching right now.
“We’ve got to see that the job’s done decently this time… If we can work together now to look after the lives of the people here I don’t see why we couldn’t work together afterwards to clear up the mess, and help build a better world in which these things can’t possibly happen... It’s people like us that are doing the work of the war. And it’s people like us who are going to do the work of the peace.”
Sending solidarity, and please take care of yourselves.
