Mexican authorities opted not to impede the progress of a newly formed migrant caravan that commenced its journey from the southern region of Mexico this week. Officials are presently accompanying and facilitating crowd management for the groups.
Identifying themselves as the Poverty Exodus (Exodo de la Pobreza), the caravan, consisting of over 6,000 migrants, departed from the city of Tapachula, Chiapas, on Christmas Eve. Progressing northward, members of the caravan displayed a banner bearing their name and carried a white cross at various points during the journey. Publicly stating their aim to reach the United States for economic reasons, some migrants informed El Pais newspaper that their intention was to stay in the U.S. for 5-7 years before returning home. The migrants also called on U.S. President Joe Biden for assistance along their journey.
By Wednesday night, the group had arrived at the town of Mapastepec, Chiapas, approximately 60 miles (100 km) northwest of the Mexico-Guatemala border. They camped for the night and resumed their journey on Thursday morning, as disclosed by high-ranking officials from Mexico’s National Migration Institute to Breitbart Texas.
Throughout various segments of the journey, members of Mexico’s National Guard provided an escort, assisting with crowd and traffic control as the group advanced northward toward Mexico City. Officials from the National Migration Institute revealed to Breitbart Texas that their instructions were to accompany the caravan to prevent issues but not to attempt to detain or obstruct its movement. It is asserted that once the caravan reaches Mexico City, it is likely to disband, with migrants arranging their own means of transportation.
As previously reported by Breitbart Texas, Mexico City has experienced a significant influx of migrants in recent months, leading to overcrowded shelters and immigration facilities, forcing thousands to sleep on the streets. An official from the National Migration Institute informed Breitbart Texas that Mexico City serves not only as a transportation hub for migrants heading north to the U.S. border but is also a crucial city for asylum seekers utilizing the CBP One app to schedule appointments.
According to Border Patrol reports, the Biden administration is on track to break the previous record for the number of migrants apprehended entering the U.S. illegally between ports of entry in December. An unofficial report indicates that approximately 232,000 migrants were apprehended by Border Patrol agents in the first 28 days of December. With three days remaining in the month, the total could reach nearly 260,000 by the end of December.
As per an unofficial Border Patrol report reviewed by Breitbart Texas, Border Patrol agents across the nation have already apprehended approximately 232,000 migrants in December. This surpasses the previous single-month record of just over 224,000 migrants set just one year ago, according to the CBP Nationwide Encounters Report.
The Tucson Sector continues to lead the nation in migrant apprehensions for December. Tucson Sector Chief Patrol Agent John Modlin's unofficial reports indicate that his agents apprehended 16,800 migrants in the last week alone, bringing the total for the first four weeks of December to 73,500 migrant apprehensions. This marks the highest single-month total for the Tucson Sector since March 2020, during the last year of the Clinton administration, when agents encountered 76,245 migrants. In contrast, during FY20, President Donald Trump's last full year in office, Tucson Sector agents apprehended only 66,076 migrants.
Since the beginning of the new fiscal year on October 1, agents have already apprehended more than 615,000 migrants.
