To all affected by the coronavirus, experiencing anxiety about its impacts, or grieving the loss of loved ones: our hearts are with you, and we wish you wellness and calm at this extraordinarily difficult time.
Now more than ever, we at the NhRP are reflecting on how vital it is to protect the most vulnerable among us, recognize and make decisions based on the interconnectedness of life on earth, and alleviate individual suffering at the same time as we join together to confront the systemic issues that create this suffering in the first place.
The NhRP is already an all-remote organization, so we’ll continue to work from home and take all the necessary precautions [[link removed]] to keep ourselves and our communities healthy, now and in the weeks ahead.
If you’re interested in learning more about how we work and what we’re working on, visit our blog [[link removed]] for a new post by NhRP Staff Attorney Amy Kapoor about a recent three-day legal team meeting at NhRP President Steven M. Wise’s house (with special appearances by Steve’s canine companion Yogi).
A few more quick updates:
To honor the NhRP’s elephant client Karen a year after her death, NhRP supporter Jordon Adorno has generously shared with us a highly personal story about the relationship he had with Karen when he was a child, how he came to understand her suffering as he grew older, and why he supports the NhRP’s fight for Minnie’s liberty and release to a sanctuary. Minnie is the sole surviving elephant imprisoned by the Commerford Zoo. Read Jordon’s story here [[link removed]] .
Steve recently appeared on the Our Wild World radio show to talk about the progress we’ve made as we’ve litigated against the presumed dominion of human over nonhuman animals, what makes this progress possible (hint: it involves you!), and much more. Listen to the show here [[link removed]] .
In case you missed it, the NhRP’s nonhuman rights litigation is the subject of a “Great Courses” lecture in the series “Liberty on Trial in America: Cases That Defined Freedom” hosted by Professor Douglas O. Linder of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. The whole series is excellent, and we highly recommend it. To listen to or watch the lecture, sign up for a free two-week trial or purchase a DVD here [[link removed]] . Read Steve’s reflections on the lecture here [[link removed]] .
NhRP Executive Director Kevin Schneider is profiled on the website OZY, which “help[s] curious people see the world more broadly and more boldly.” As Justin Marceau, a law professor who has submitted amicus briefs in support of our cases, says, “There’s a reputation of animal rights people of being grumps, but [Kevin is] very much a people person.” We couldn’t agree more and are grateful for Kevin’s always positive energy. Read the profile here [[link removed]] .
Thank you as always, John, for helping us build a more just world for all.
All best wishes,
The NhRP
