Your contributions—whether of time, treasure, talent, or all of the above—have been pivotal in Sister District’s work to build enduring power in state legislatures.
Dear John,
As we turn the corner into 2024, many of us are already thinking ahead to the next election. Some concern is warranted—we have another tough and existential battle in front of us. But in these final days of 2023, please also make space for a sense of gratitude and awe as you take a look back at the immense progress we have made together this past year.
Your contributions—whether of time, treasure, talent, or all of the above—have been pivotal in Sister District’s work to build enduring power in state legislatures. This year, we flipped the Virginia House and defended the Senate, safeguarding the last sanctuary for reproductive rights in the South, and demonstrating that we will not back down from protecting abortion in this post-Roe world.
Sister District’s role in these victories was outsized, a testament to the strength of our grassroots power. We were among the top ten donors to all of our candidates as of Election Day, contributing crucial early support that allowed them to build momentum and gain the edge in tightly contested races. Our postcards touched hard-to-reach voters, and our best-in-class phonebanking operation made a remarkable average of 43% of our candidates’ calls to voters.
In close races, it comes down to the margin of effort—to who works harder to turn out voters. And our volunteers put in this effort, one voter at a time. Barbara's call motivated a woman to go vote immediately while still on the phone. Susan’s conversation about LGBTQ+ rights with a voter led to a change of heart in support of Joshua Cole. Rebekka's encouragement turned a voter from hesitant to eager, even inspiring them to volunteer. And after 54 calls with no answer, Lyra had two conversations with undecided voters who wanted to learn more about Lashrecse Aird. This synergy of passion and strategy is how we approach everything we do at Sister District, and we couldn’t do it without you.
We march on—emboldened by our successes, energized by the challenges that lie ahead, and guided by our north star to build power in key states every year this decade to be in the strongest position possible for redistricting in 2031. Beyond elections, we continue our year-round work to support candidates, local organizers, and cutting-edge research to lay the groundwork for future wins in battlegrounds like Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
As we step into the new year, I invite you to remain actively engaged with us. Whether it’s hosting an event, volunteering your time, or sharing our mission with others, your involvement is key to our continued success. Together, we will continue to build power where it truly matters—in the states.
In moments like these, when it feels as though the whole world is torn with conflict, it can be easy to lose hope. But please take pride in the knowledge that your support has been instrumental in shaping a freer and fairer future. Your dedication is the cornerstone of our success and, indeed, our democracy. Happy holidays and warmest wishes from all of us at Sister District.
