2013 The EPA approves water quality standards for the Indian River Lagoon, a warm- water habitat that supports more plants and animals than any other estuary in North America. The agency concludes the new standards will not “adversely affect” manatees.

2020 Uncontrolled pollution from fertilizer, sewage, and manure feeds deadly algal outbreaks that suffocate and destroy seagrass — an important food source for manatees. As a result, manatees begin starving to death at unprecedented rates.

2021-2022
In just two years, as much as 25% of Florida’s entire east coast population of manatees dies. More than a thousand manatees perish. Over half of the deaths are preventable.

Earthjustice threatens to sue if the EPA does not take steps to reevaluate Florida’s water quality standards.
