Earlier this week, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced that her state would be opting out of Summer EBT, a federal program that would provide all families with school-age children, $40 per eligible child, per month during the summer months.
Hunger Free America has been a vocal proponent of the Summer EBT program. We calculate that struggling families, and Iowa's economy, will lose more than $20 million in federally funded groceries due the governor's shortsighted decision.
As our CEO Joel Berg told KCRG in Iowa, “If you care morally about families being healthier, if you care economically about having the state of Iowa spend less on health care, then you should support more federal funds to help people obtain healthier food.”
