John--
In these uncertain times, I am grateful to our community. Many of our municipal chairs and active members have been working in their communities to give information and support to the most vulnerable among us, and I want to commend them. You have all been working proactively to flatten the curve and, just as importantly, remembering and reaching out to those who are most affected by the rapidly changing landscape of our country.
I also want to thank everyone in the 25th Legislative District who participated in our electronic vote on Sunday. Just five days after we made the decision to cancel our convention, we had a secure, anonymous ranked choice vote with a phenomenal 90% turnout rate. I’d particularly like to thank Darcy Draeger, our Chester municipal chair and candidate for Assembly in the 25th Legislative District; Amanda Richardson, our Harding chair; and Leslye Moya, our political director, for their hard work pulling the election together in such a short time.
Congratulations are due to all three candidates: Rupande Mehta, Jeff Grayzel, and Cliff Dawkins. All show a commendable willingness to run and to serve, and each one would have been an amazing candidate for the general election. We are lucky to be in a position where so many talented individuals are stepping up. The race was close, and I expect we will be seeing great things from Jeff and Cliff in the future.
Finally, I congratulate Rupande Mehta on her win. I first met Rupande in 2017, when she ran for Denville council. She was a passionate, progressive community leader then, and has only grown more dedicated. In 2018, she ran a hard-fought campaign for Morris County Freeholder and was a champion canvasser. I am confident Rupande has the skills to win against Tony Bucco in November and, most importantly, to represent the 25th ably in the NJ Senate. She believes in science and in listening to the people, and in recent days we have all seen how important those both are. I encourage you to go to her website at www.rupandemehta.com and give her a donation and sign up for her email list. She will need all of our support in the coming days and weeks.
I know that these are tough times for all of us, but I am confident that we can emerge from all of this as a stronger party and as a stronger country.
