Hey there,

Here at When Democrats Turn Out, we wanted to personally reach out and talk about the crisis we're facing from COVID-19.

It's okay to feel scared -- we're scared. It's okay to feel overwhelmed -- we're a bit overwhelmed too.

But it's also okay to feel hopeful, because we're hopeful that we will beat this together, by working as one people. The U.S. Surgeon General tells us that if we socially distance and limit face-to-face interactions right now, we have the ability to "flatten the curve" by reducing the number of cases per day so that our hospitals can cope and not be overwhelmed, saving lives. We see a lot of charts about the exponential growth of the virus, but every infection we stop from happening now also has an exponential effect in cases averted and lives saved, as seen below:

[Graph of cases averted with two exponential lines, one red detailing "Avert one case now" and one yellow detailing "Avert one case in 7 days."]

But it has to be NOW. If we follow the instructions of medical professionals, practice social distancing by staying at home and avoiding crowds, and practice good hygiene by washing our hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds and cleaning surfaces regularly, we can beat this. (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a good website for how to prevent transmission here: [link removed])

It's going to take all of us to beat this, though. You can still transmit the disease even if you don't have a fever, cough, or any other symptoms, so please avoid contact with people whenever possible.

This is about more than just the safety of you and your family. The elderly, immunosuppressed, and those who can't afford medical care are depending on us to halt transmission and protect them.

We'll be in contact when we know more. In the meantime, keep practicing social distancing and kindness. We WILL persevere.

Thank you,
The WDTO Team
