N.B. Our $50,000 matching challenge for new and increased gifts runs through December 31. Give now to double your impact on FIRST THINGS!

Dear Reader,

I awaited Rusty’s response with some curiosity.

I usually do, of course. But in this case I had left on his desk a review of his new book which—while complimentary in places—launched some rather fierce criticisms in the author’s direction.

He emerged from his office fifteen minutes later. “Fantastic!” he declared. “Don’t change a word.”

We published the review the following month.

This is the spirit of FIRST THINGS . . . and it starts at the top. Good humor instead of po-faced rigidity. Real conversation instead of nervously intoning a party line. The pursuit of truth even when—as it sometimes must—it makes you wince. When we get it right, it makes for a very special magazine.

I hardly need to add that it all depends entirely on your generous support.

But that, of course, is why you’re hearing from me today.

Please make a special year-end gift to FIRST THINGS. Let’s elevate this special magazine to even greater heights in the new year together.

Gratefully yours,

Dan Hitchens
