Dear OCCRP Reader,
As we’re on the cusp of entering another tough year, we want to take a moment to thank you for all your continued support in 2023.
|
|
Because of your support, we made several major accomplishments, including:
|
|
-
Tracking real-world impact, including:
-
Maldives’ former president Abdulla Yameen was sentenced this year to 11 years in prison and ordered to pay a $5 million fine for accepting bribes and money laundering after our 2018 investigation.
-
A joint FBI-Romanian law enforcement raid recovered more than $1 million in cash and cryptocurrencies and resulted in 48 arrests after our 2020 investigation in which we named the global Riviera Maya Gang and reported on their extensive ATM-skimming activities.
-
France and Germany issued international arrest warrants for Lebanon’s former central bank governor Riad Salame and the U.S., UK, and Canada imposed sanctions on Salame and three of his associates after our 2020 investigation.
-
Launching new, one-of-a-kind initiatives:
-
Reporters Shield, which helps protect investigative reporting from legal harassment worldwide
-
Floodlight, which connects investigative reporters with filmmakers to create movies and TV series that explains how organized crime and corruption really work
-
Dirty Deeds podcast, which brings behind-the-scenes details of how our journalists collaborate to uncover crime and corruption to new audiences
Despite these successes, there is so much more we want to do.
We would not be OCCRP without you. Please help us bring about a world where lives, livelihoods, and democracy are not threatened by crime and corruption.
