It's time we focus our attention on our communities and working to #BeatCoronaVirus

Early Saturday morning, I voted against the Pelosi-Mnuchin Wuhan virus legislation -- and it's important you understand why ([link removed]) . My colleagues and I had no time to debate, amend, or even read the bill, and, at a time when we need to come together and do things the right way, the House of Representatives passed badly flawed legislation without doing our due diligence to ensure our solution doesn't do more harm than good.

We are facing an historic challenge, and we will adapt and rise to it, but it will not be without significant hardship. Government can and should act, but it cannot do so with the recklessness that Pelosi and Mnuchin did late last week by rushing the legislation to a vote.

If we had the opportunity to speak, let alone put forth amendments, I would have made suggestions such as expansive and immediate small business loans, and other measures to keep businesses afloat through the negative impacts of government calls to stay home, tax relief, and many others you can read about here ([link removed]) . We need to act decisively and swiftly to find health care solutions, while keeping the wheels of commerce moving as much as possible, and then get things back to full speed in a very short amount of time -- and as the debate in Congress continues, that will be my mission.
As a reminder, we all need to continue, to the best of our ability, calmly and rationally implement social distancing efforts for the coming weeks ([link removed]) . This means trying to maintain a six-foot distance from other people, staying at home, avoiding large group gatherings, work from home if possible, and calling your doctor first before going into their offices if you have symptoms.

These social distancing practices may need to stay in place for a month or longer.

In that spirit, we are putting a hold on campaign events for the foreseeable future as we unite to #BeatCoronaVirus. And during that time we're asking for your help getting involved in our community ([link removed]) .

Few people can completely seclude themselves from the outside world for that long, which presents obvious challenges. Now, perhaps more than ever in recent memory, we need to come together at the local/neighborhood level and develop strategies to reduce pathogen exposure to demographics at increased risk ([link removed]) .

As communities, we have the ability to reach out to our older neighbors and run errands for them, pick up and drop off groceries, go to the post office for them, and hundreds of additional unpredictable needs.

Our team has put together a community-based approach to reduce CoronaVirus exposure to senior citizens and other at-risk demographics, and we hope you'll take a look and start putting together a plan for your neighborhood. ([link removed])

Lastly, as we shift our focus entirely on the effort to #BeatCoronaVirus, our campaign will not be soliciting any contributions for a period of time. Instead, we would encourage you to support local businesses and members of our community that can use the help in this difficult time.

If you, your family, or your friends go out to eat, or order takeout/delivery, consider doubling the amount you'd normally tip. If you have a favorite local restaurant or small business, consider purchasing a gift card now to use once we've beaten CoronaVirus.

And until the fight to #BeatCoronaVirus is complete, we'll continue to reach out with updates -- whether with new information or ways you can help the members of our local community.

Until then, let's drop politics and do what Americans do best. Triumph ([link removed]) .
