Gazans are telling us, “We are witnessing a Nakba even worse than the one our parents and grandparents endured.” The world is watching this second Nakba unfold—and this one is on us because Israel is using our tax dollars to kill and displace Palestinian civilians, drive them from their homes and destroy their future.

It’s hard to unsee scenes of Israel’s obliteration of Gaza using American-made and financed bombs. Gazans are facing “catastrophic hunger and starvation,” even as the U.S. waters down—then vetoes or abstains from—U.N. resolutions that Israel ignores.

President Joe Biden is agonizing about next year’s elections and his abysmal poll numbers. Neither corporate media nor his advisers dare say the obvious, which is what we’ve been saying for more than 40 years: “Stop supporting Israeli apartheid and war crimes. Call for a ceasefire, an end to illegal Israeli settlements, freedom and equal rights for both Israelis and Palestinians and you will find a groundswell of support from people of every age, ethnic and religious background. If Israel ignores you, cut off all aid.” Members of Congress need to hear the same message. They receive every issue of the Washington Report, in hopes they will read about what they are funding and change course.

Visitors to Middle East Books and More say that when they walk through our doors, they feel safe and free to speak their mind. At our recent holiday market, visitors wrote messages of support to Gaza children and hung those notes on our Christmas tree. In February we will begin expanding Middle East Books and More to have more space for book talks, clubs, film screenings and other events.

The people of Gaza do not need our pity, they need our action. Their bravery must inspire us to fearlessly speak out until leaders in our government, corporate media, workplaces, schools, universities and houses of worship listen to our voices.
