Like so many Americans, I'm worried. I'm thinking about the safety of my family, friends, neighbors, and people all over the world -- and about how COVID-19 will impact one of the most important elections of our lifetime. While it's not clear how long this pandemic will last, I'm staying focused on how to ensure that every eligible American's ability to vote is protected through this uncertain election season. For anyone who was following what happened in Ohio yesterday, or Louisiana and Georgia last week, you know that that ability is already being threatened. That's why it's crucial that -- in addition to acting immediately to provide much-needed economic support and health care coverage -- Congress act swiftly to protect our elections. The bottom line: We must make it as easy as possible to vote by mail in 2020. Congress is debating their response to COVID-19 now. Please take a minute to call your representative and demand emergency funding for states to ensure that every eligible American can vote-by-mail be part of that response. Nothing less than the integrity of the 2020 election is at stake.
We already have strong models for how voting by mail works. Colorado, Hawaii, Washington, and Oregon already conduct elections almost entirely by mail and have done so for years. Allowing every eligible voter to have the choice to cast their ballot by mail is good for our democracy across the board, not just during a pandemic. This change will help modernize our elections, streamline the voting process, and strengthen our democracy for years to come. When we increase access to voting, more voters participate. In the 2018 midterms, states allowing vote-by-mail saw, on average, a 15.5 percent higher turnout rate than states who did not. We don't have much time to get states the critical funding they need to implement vote-by-mail. Please take a moment to call now. The leaders we elect have the ability to take actions that improve the health and well-being of all Americans, or to put our health and well-being at risk. In this moment, more than ever, we must protect every American's right to have a say in who represents us. We will be in touch soon with where the fight goes from here. For now, stay safe, practice social distancing when you can, and stay healthy. And as always, thank you for all you do. Christina Harvey Managing Director, Stand Up America P.S.
