Wuqu’ Kawoq’s staff treats more than 10,000 patients and makes some 35,000 visits annually to homes, clinics, and community centers in Guatemala’s Central Highlands. More than 5,000 women each year receive reproductive health services, including modern contraception.
Similarly, Manos Abiertas offers the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health care. Staffed only by women, they strive to offer women-centered care that is respectful and evidence-based. Short and long-acting family planning methods are provided.

Guatemala has the highest birth rate in Central America. More than half of sexually active, never-married women, and a quarter of married women aged 15–19, have an unmet need for modern contraception. We know that filling this unmet need—in Guatemala and elsewhere—is a human rights imperative. Aside from slowing population growth, women and girls who have bodily autonomy are better able to maintain their health, raise healthy children, and make key contributions to society.
