Last week, we released a groundbreaking report exposing five major financial institutions – JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, BlackRock, HSBC and Goldman Sachs – which continue to pour billions into oil extraction in the western Amazon despite their recently celebrated climate commitments.
At the same time, the threats of COVID-19 were escalating. But before our politicians and officials pushed out recommendations, we were already taking the lead from our partners on the ground and halting all travel. We are shifting and adjusting but remaining fully dedicated to protecting the Amazon and indigenous rights.
At Amazon Watch, we have taken swift steps to shift our participation in the #StopTheMoneyPipeline Global Day of Action to be completely online. Because it's abundantly clear that for the banks listed in our report, it seems like a great time to take advantage of a crisis to increase financing the destruction of the Amazon rainforest.
But they're wrong. We might not be chanting outside their doors, but we will not let up on the pressure.
These financial giants have all the resources and industry-friendly media they need to bury this report. Can you help us scale up online engagement for our global day of action?
Protecting the Amazon rainforest and indigenous rights has a large movement behind it. With your monthly support, we're going to adapt, evolve, and win.
For our collective future,
