John,
At 1 a.m. on Saturday, the House came together and overwhelmingly passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.
This bill (when passed by the Senate and signed into law) will provide free COVID-19 testing, paid sick leave, expanded food benefits and unemployment insurance, and protections for frontline health care workers.
There were only 40 no votes -- our own representative, Steve King, was one of them.
His vote shows how little he cares for the folks in the district. He would rather tout hyper-partisan views than help those who are suffering during this pandemic.
Rural America, especially Iowa, faces unique vulnerabilities to this public health crisis. Our population is older, sicker, and poorer than average. More people are uninsured and under-insured and lack access to healthcare and paid leave. Our few and far between hospitals and clinics could easily be overwhelmed by a large volume of patients.
Steve King has the luxuries that so many of us don’t have: paid leave, great health insurance, and a comfortable, stable salary. Compare that to the folks who work hourly jobs, who have to choose between staying home and healthy and earning a paycheck that will keep the roof over their heads, and who are scrambling to figure out how to take care of their children and older relatives during this time.
We are safer and stronger when we look out for each other. I promise to always look out for you, John. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about Steve King.
Please be safe out there and follow all of the recommended precautions by our government and the CDC. We need to take this seriously. Last weekend was the first time I didn’t drink Communion wine at church. This weekend, I attended a virtual mass. The choices we make now impact so many others -- so please, do the right thing.
Standing Tall for All,
