Celebrate 2024 with First Day Hikes

Start a new tradition with your friends and family: Go on a First Day Hike at a Nebraska state park to celebrate the new year.

On Jan. 1, more than 20 Nebraska state parks will hold guided hikes for the public; some events will include special activities such as a potluck soup luncheon, winter art and tours of facilities. But people are welcome to choose any state park and create their own hiking adventure.

A 2024 state park entry permit is required; buy at a park office or ahead of time online [ [link removed] ]. Also, dress for the weather and bring your dog, but be sure to keep him or her on a leash.

Seek out a challenge with the Upland Slam

There is still plenty of time to enjoy some upland bird hunting in Nebraska ? and to challenge yourself with the Upland Slam. Harvest four species in the state?? a sharp-tailed grouse, greater prairie-chicken, ring-necked pheasant and northern bobwhite quail ? and the Slam is yours, along with an official certificate, pin and epic bragging rights.
