Jack, sign and send this urgent petition: Stop insuring the Rio Grande liquified natural gas terminal now!

SIGN AND SEND THE PETITION

The Rio Grande liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal in South Texas will be the biggest polluter in the region. Rio Grande LNG’s existence is a complete disregard for Indigenous sovereignty and the sacred sites for the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas. It is also yet another new fossil fuel project amid a catastrophic climate crisis.

This project cannot continue without the support of insurance companies who must recognize their moral and globally-conscience position to not support this destructive project.

Rio Grande LNG (liquid “natural” gas, or LNG) is a proposed methane gas export terminal slated for Brownsville, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. This project is a clear case of environmental racism with enormous, devastating impacts on community health, Indigenous rights, endangered species, and our shared climate.

Rio Grande LNG is set to move forward, despite climate and community impacts and years of community resistance. Big Insurers like Chubb, Liberty Mutual, and Sompo have the power to stop this project by refusing to insure it. And we have the power to demand they do just that.

The Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, the original Indigenous people of the region, have not given their Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) for Rio Grande LNG. The proposed terminal will support the continued environmental racism in the Gulf by perpetuating the displacement, pollution, and physical harm of impacted communities.

And there’s nothing “natural” about methane gas expansion. Methane gas has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere. Methane is highly volatile, and this build-out poses especially dangerous explosion risks.

It is imperative that the supporting insurance companies listen to Indigenous and impacted communities. And time is running out for transformative action to tackle the climate crisis.

Sign and send the petition to the insurers connected to this project: Listen to impacted communities and publicly drop Rio Grande LNG before the insurance renewal in March 2024.
