Earlier this year, the Supreme Court’s decision in Sackett vs. EPA gutted existing protections for our country’s critical wetlands and waterways, but SEEC Members are fighting back.
Now, SEEC Members Rep. Rick Larsen , Rep. Don Beyer , and Rep. Melanie Stansbury are pushing to pass the Clean Water Act of 2023, a bill that would reinstate the bipartisan, federal-state partnership that had been protecting our rivers, streams, and wetlands up until the Sackett decision.
John, when court decisions threaten keystone environmental protections, it’s essential that we can fight back using SEEC’s leverage in Congress. The original Clean Water Act was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in 1972 to “restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation’s waters.”
But as a result of the Sackett decision, an estimated 50% of wetlands and over 70% of rivers, lakes, and streams have lost their federal protection, leaving it up to individual states to manage the health of complex watershed systems that transcend far beyond their borders.
