The profound effects of climate change have been undeniable in 2023—from extreme heat to intense flooding to wildfires ravaging sacred lands. These events have left devastating scars on local communities, with the most vulnerable people and places bearing an unequal level of the burden in the aftermath of disasters.
We are at a pivotal time to make certain that the policies and practices we put into place address the disparities made worse by climate change. The Urban Institute is meeting the moment by developing evidence-informed solutions for at-risk communities across the country.
We are elevating those with the greatest potential for impact to help ensure climate interventions are equitable and lasting for all people and communities.
Today, we are collecting and analyzing data
on how renters—who are especially vulnerable to climate extremes—recover after disasters. We are collaborating with resident-owned mobile home parks to help them become more resilient to climate disasters. We are studying health care costs stemming from climate-fueled disasters in overburdened communities along the Gulf Coast to inform adaption planning. And this is just the beginning of our work to advance both equity and environmental justice.
Urban equips policymakers with insights to better shape solutions that mitigate inequities in our communities.
