Today marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most important conservation laws ever passed: the Endangered Species Act.

This bedrock environmental law has had monumental success. Of the species protected by it, 99% are still with us today. Unfortunately, some of these species have powerful enemies. These opponents are doing all they can to strip away the ESA's legal protections.

Gray wolves and grizzly bears — species that Earthjustice has long fought to protect — are among the mammals actively at risk of delisting due to new anti-environmental legislation in Congress. We know from experience that gray wolves and grizzly bears need two things to have a fighting chance: a team of best-in-class environmental lawyers, and a team of Earthjustice supporters who will fight wholeheartedly to ensure their future.

Endangered Species Act protections often have cascading impacts. Gray wolves and grizzly bears are keystone species, meaning the health of entire ecosystems hinges on their survival. What’s more, when a species is protected under the ESA, its habitat is protected too — giving us legal standing to stop development, trapping, and road building in entire regions.

For decades, grizzly bears have faced relentless persecution throughout the country. Bears were shot, poisoned, and trapped, reducing their population to fewer than 1,000 individuals in the lower 48 states. And while populations in certain regions have increased marginally, new threats are mounting due to climate change, killing by humans, potentially hostile state management, and increased road densities.

Despite these challenges, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering a petition to remove Endangered Species Act protections for Greater Yellowstone and Northern Continental Divide grizzly bear populations and new legislation has been introduced that would fully delist grizzlies in the lower 48 states.

For the past two decades, Earthjustice has been instrumental in protecting gray wolves in court. Most recently, Earthjustice successfully reversed a decision by the Trump administration that removed ESA protections for most gray wolves in the lower 48 states. But lawmakers are now putting gray wolves at risk yet again with wolf delisting bills like the deceptively named “Trust the Science Act.”

With politicians, hunters, and developers constantly at their throats, gray wolves desperately need people willing to fight back on their behalf.

Earthjustice has proved time and time again that the law is an extraordinarily powerful tool in protecting these species. We recently secured threatened species protections for the wolverine, adding to our list of dozens of legal wins obtaining and expanding Endangered Species Act protections for wildlife.
