TOP 10 HIGHLIGHTS OF 2023
This has been a banner year for the fight against assisted suicide! We are immensely grateful for all of our partners and advocates that worked tirelessly to protect the lives of patients from deadly harm.
Below are our top 10 pieces of news from the 2023 year:

1. Along with a group of plaintiffs, our sister organization, the Institute for Patients' Rights, filed a lawsuit claiming California’s assisted suicide law violates the ADA and the Constitution. Read the coverage here.

2. The plaintiff group, End Assisted Suicide, launched a video campaign explaining the case and telling the personal stories of two of the plaintiffs, Ingrid Tischer and Lonnie VanHook. You can view those videos here.

3. Our Director of Disability Outreach, Ian McIntosh, had a powerful opinion piece published in the Washington Post. Read the article here.

4. This was the second year in a row where there were no new states that passed assisted suicide laws. We’re so thankful to our advocates for this victory.

5. Our Executive Director, Matt Vallière, had an opinion piece published in the Hill. You can read the piece here.

6. The Christian Medical & Dental Association and Alliance Defending Freedom effected an injunction on the provision in CA and induced the NM legislature to amend the law, protecting the rights of patients to receive care from non-participating doctors without fear. 7. Numerous allies in the disability, medical, and religious communities commended Governor Joe Lombardo for his veto of SB 239, legislation that would have for the first time legalized assisted suicide in Nevada. Read coverage on the veto here.

8. Jules Good, former Assistant Director at Not Dead Yet and current Programs Coordinator at the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, wrote a piece for the Washington Post on the dangers of assisted suicide and anorexia. You can read the article here.

9. In a resounding victory, the American Medical Association House of Delegates retained its position in opposition to assisted suicide. Our statement on the victory is available to read here.
