Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act. This act establishes crucial protections for fish, wildlife, and plants that are categorized as threatened and endangered. Three species listed under the Endangered Species Act call the Boundary Waters home - the gray wolf, Canada lynx, and the northern long-eared bat. 

But anti-Wilderness Congress members are using this moment to reintroduce an extreme anti-wildlife bill to weaken critical endangered species protections and threaten the northern long-eared bat and other endangered species. A once-thriving species, the northern long-eared bat population is hanging on for dear life. Their population has dropped by more than 90% due to white-nose syndrome since 2006. But rather than work to protect the bats that remain, Rep. Stauber released legislation to amend the Endangered Species Act and allow the destruction of their habitat to make room for copper mining. The northern long-eared bats may be tiny, but they are an important part of the Boundary Waters ecosystem. They help control the insect population (by eating the dreaded mosquitoes!) and they pollinate plants. The proposed bill would make way for forest clearing that would destroy the habitat these bats hibernate, nest, and roost in, putting them at risk of permanent extinction. This is why we need to stop this harmful legislation now before Boundary Waters bats lose crucial habitat protections at this vulnerable time.
