You don't want to miss this.   Dear John, Our first group of mentors is now active! (see them here). This has been over 2 years in the making, and I couldn’t be more excited! Why am I so excited? Because we are on the precipice of something wonderful. Let me explain. We started planning A Mentor For Me two years ago on the firm conviction that the lack of mentoring & discipleship among Christians is a crisis — one of the major reasons the church is having such a limited impact on the culture. And I believed that the lack of discipleship in the church was primarily due to a lack of commitment, that it just wasn’t a high enough priority on the part of many pastors and Christian leaders. But since then I’ve discovered that there is a much deeper, more fundamental issue that often keeps people from being discipled — that keeps people from being mentored by older Christians; We suffer from what my good friend Eric Bents has coined relational poverty. In short, we are much too isolated from one another. Think about it; the inertia of our lives —our schedules, our lifestyles, our technology, just about everything in our culture, enables — and even pushes us — toward isolation. It’s an epidemic in our nation. It’s an epidemic in the church. It’s quite harmful. It’s toxic and corrosive. And it has no place in the church. Isolation is actually a major strategy of the enemy. Jesus, however, wants us, his followers in community. And not just community; He wants us in unity with other believers. It’s only in the context of attached, healthy relationships with others (who know us well and deeply care about us) that healing, growth, and genuine life transformation occur. If you’ve ever personally experienced meaningful healing or growth, it was most likely the result of the Lord working through your inner circle of deep friendships. We are meant to live in community with others. And if you want to follow Christ —I mean seriously cooperate with what God wants in you and from you — then you must be willing to grow in this area of relational self-awareness. Translation: You have to be intentional in knowing others and in being known by others. You see when you open yourself to know and be known by others, you put yourself in a position where genuine growth and life change (sanctification) can take place. Yes, moving from isolation into greater relational abundance is an essential component of becoming who God wants you to be. I’ll go even farther— I believe that you can’t actually get to the place God wants to take you on your own. You just can’t get there. Your road to success in the kingdom of God requires you to develop relational abundance. Bottom line: You need other people to get you where God wants to take you. This is why I am so excited. Because our mentors are ready to walk with mentees on their journey to relational abundance and meaningful spiritual development and growth. How does this impact you? Well, if you are (or someone you know is) a male over 18 years old, and you want to open your life up to others, to know and be known, to glean from those who have gone before you in order to avoid the pitfalls and mistakes the enemy of your soul wants to throw at you, then this is your opportunity. If you’d like to take the next step in what God has for you (or if this describes someone you know) then you have the opportunity to reach out to one of these 13 men as a mentor. If you need, or someone you know needs a Mentor, then please register here. And then you will be able to reach out to one of these 13 men today. It costs nothing. Nada. Zilch. Check it out. You won’t be sorry. And If you’d like to participate in our next mentor orientation & training series that begins very soon called Fast Forward, click here to select a time. Blessings to you this Christmas season. I’ll be in touch with more news very soon.
