The stars at night are big and bright at our state historic sites! Recently, our sites received approval for Dark Sky Certification, which allows preservation of the night sky and utilizes methods to protect its visibility and enjoyment for surrounding landowners and visitors. In 2024, keep an eye out for upcoming seasonal starry night events at Fort McKavett, Fort Griffin, and Caddo Mounds. Sam Rayburn was born in Tennessee on January 6, 1882. In honor of his 141st birthday, Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site in Bonham will host a birthday party for the late U.S. Speaker of the House on Saturday, January 6. Discover the story of one of the most powerful and influential politicians of the 20th century in his authentic 1916 home. Preserved as a period time capsule, the two-story home contains all original Rayburn furnishings. Visitors explore Rayburn’s personal life and political achievements.
The premier historic preservation and heritage tourism conference in the Lone Star State, Real Places 2024 is presented by the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission in partnership with Phoenix I Restoration and Construction, LLC. It will take place April 3-5 both online and at the Renaissance Austin Hotel. Recordings will be available to all attendees, whether joining us online or in person, so you’ll be able to watch all the great presentations you missed due to concurrent sessions.
