How Generative AI Is Changing Creative Work Generative AI models for businesses threaten to upend the world of content creation, with substantial impacts on marketing, software, design, entertainment, and interpersonal communications. These models are able to produce text and images: blog posts, program code, poetry, and artwork. The software uses complex machine learning models to predict the next word based on previous word sequences, or the next image based on words describing previous images. Companies need to understand how these tools work, and how they can add value.

WorkTom Smothers, Comic Half of the Smothers Brothers, Dies at 86 In an interview for the Archive of American Television in 2000, Mr. Smothers looked back on the show and its impact. “It was the ’60s that we reflected,” he said. “The country was going through a revolution — a social revolution, a political and consciousness revolution, about government and its part. We tried to reflect that.” Work

WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkVaccine could cut RSV hospital admissions in babies by 80%, study finds Dr Simon Drysdale, co-study leader and consultant paediatrician at St George’s University hospitals, said: “RSV is a very contagious infection and every year our wards are full of babies with breathing and feeding problems. The thousands of winter hospital admissions are highly distressing for families and cause a huge winter burden on the NHS. This groundbreaking study shows the potential NHS impact and safety of a monoclonal antibody injection.” WorkWorkWorkMichigan Supreme Court Decides Trump Can Stay on Ballot Ms. Benson, the Michigan secretary of state and a Democrat, echoed the request for a quick decision, citing approaching deadlines for printing paper primary ballots. She wrote that a ruling was needed by Dec. 29 “in order to ensure an orderly election process.” WorkWorkWorkHerbert Kohl, Former Wisconsin Senator and Milwaukee Bucks Owner, Dies at 88 His political experience had been limited. He had been chairman of Wisconsin’s Democratic Party from 1975 to 1977, but he had never held office. The 1988 Democratic primary election to succeed a retiring William Proxmire, who had fought wasteful government spending for 32 years in the Senate, centered on two major issues: campaign expenditures and name recognition. WorkWorkHouse Republicans Target Biden by Focusing on His Son’s News Conference Democrats contend that Mr. Comer should have taken up Hunter Biden on his offer to testify at a public hearing, noting he previously offered to let witnesses testify at either a deposition or a public hearing, “whichever they choose.” They have also pointed out that Mr. Jordan never testified before the House Jan. 6 committee, even though he was issued a subpoena. WorkProsecutors Ask Judge to Keep Trump From Making ‘Baseless Political Claims’ in Trial The 20-page motion was filed two weeks after Judge Chutkan effectively froze the case in place as an appeals court considers Mr. Trump’s broad claims that he is immune from prosecution. Last week, the Supreme Court declined to hear the question of the immunity immediately, although the justices are likely to take up the issue after the appeals court completes its highly accelerated review. WorkWorkWorkWorkTwo US senators told Elon Musk they want Tesla to end the year with even more recalls Blumenthal and Markey were upset over that issue as well, writing in a previous letter to the Federal Trade Commission that “Tesla and Mr. Musk’s repeated overstatements of their vehicle’s capabilities—despite clear and frequent warnings—demonstrate a deeply concerning disregard for the safety of those on the road and require real accountability.” WorkThe most interesting human-made objects ever left in space It still blows my mind to know that a car—specifically Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster—is currently in a heliocentric orbit beyond the orbit of Mars. The SpaceX CEO made it the dummy payload during the inaugural launch of the company’s Falcon Heavy rocket on February 2, 2018. A manikin named “Starman” went along for the ride, which, together with the Tesla Roadster, should also be considered for our improbable museum. WorkApple's 12 worst product failures of all time The reason for its failure was simple: the cube didn’t provide the power or features one would expect for the price. That price, by the way, was $1,799 at launch and $1,499 after a price cut. Apple admitted sales for the Power Mac G4 Cube were lower than expected. Actually, one-third of what it had anticipated, leading the company to cease production one year after launch. WorkWhy 2023 was such a good year for labor “As labor market shortages have forced firms to offer better pay compensation and benefits packages, we have seen labor market participation continue to swell,” House said, “and that has broadly been beneficial for people who might otherwise be facing some degree of discrimination.” WorkFree returns are a thing of Christmas past “Bracketing” is when online shoppers buy multiple items with the intention of returning at least some of them, perhaps to try on an article of clothing in multiple sizes or colors. The growing practice is most popular among Gen Z, with 86% of them opting for “bracketing” when they shop. The older the shopper, the less likely they are to bracket-shop. WorkNew York Times sues Microsoft and OpenAI for 'billions' As well as these actions, there have been many cases brought against developers of so-called generative AI - that is, artificial intelligence that can create media based on text prompts - with artists suing text-to-image generators Stability AI and Midjourney in January, claiming they only function by being trained on copyrighted artwork. WorkTreasury says 2024 Budget to be held on 6 March Labour\'s shadow financial secretary to the Treasury James Murray said: \"The next Budget will come after 14 years of economic failure under the Conservatives that have left working people worse off. WorkHapag-Lloyd says Red Sea route still 'too dangerous' \"Amid a global recession, Egypt is grappling with shortages of foreign exchange reserves caused by the impact on the Suez Canal, which serves as one of Egypt\'s main sources of foreign currency. As the most crucial waterway globally, any disruptions in the canal will significantly impact Egypt\'s foreign currency earnings\", he said. WorkArchitect of modern EU Jacques Delors dies aged 98 Former UK opposition leader Neil Kinnock told the programme he was a \"very polite, calm, highly intelligent man, a problem-solver\" and not a \"fanatical federalist\" as Thatcher tried to portray him. WorkWorkWorkThe Times Sues OpenAI and Microsoft Over A.I. Use of Copyrighted Work “We respect the rights of content creators and owners and are committed to working with them to ensure they benefit from A.I. technology and new revenue models,” Ms. Held said. “We’re hopeful that we will find a mutually beneficial way to work together, as we are doing with many other publishers.” WorkWorkWorkThe First Secret Asteroid Mission Won’t Be the Last Even if the asteroid cannot be identified before the launch, Dr. McDowell noted that it might be possible for amateur astronomers on Earth to track the spacecraft after it gets to space and work out where it is going. WorkWorkWorkWorkWorkGenerative AI's breakout year produced hefty profits for Nvidia and lofty experiments for others \"I thought that the excitement at the end of last year would quickly translate into enterprise adoption, but the reality is that very few companies have launched generative AI applications into production and experiments aren\'t quickly translating into reliable applications,\" Burke said. \"We\'re still looking at an outlook where companies may not widely deploy products until later next year or even the following year.\" WorkBitcoin's 2023 rally drove some of the stock market's biggest gains this year Galaxy Digital\'s Novogratz says that \"broadly we\'re still in bull market phase,\" noting that there\'s a constant and inherent scarcity of bitcoin supply. Novogratz expects bitcoin to eclipse its record high next year, and says that among respected investors, \"I can give you 50 of them on the other side of the table from Jamie Dimon.\" WorkIn Bid to Slow Migrant Surge, Adams Restricts Bus Arrivals Into New York At the news conference, the three mayors again demanded that the federal government grapple with its dysfunctional immigration system. Mr. Johnston said Denver had received more than 35,000 migrants and was housing 4,000, creating a crisis that is consuming almost 10 percent of the city’s budget. He called for the federal government to accelerate work authorizations, provide more financial assistance and develop a coordinated entry plan so that asylum seekers would be spread more evenly throughout the country. WorkImages of Watermelons Signal Support for Palestinians “Instead of this subversive way of signaling to those in the know, it becomes a symbol to everyone else: We’re here,” she said. “It becomes this broader symbol of the scope of the individuals who are a part of this resistance.” WorkPro-Palestinian Protests Block Traffic at New York and L.A. Airports Only a few days before Wednesday’s protests in New York City and Los Angeles, pro-Palestinian activists organized a similar demonstration in Chicago. A multicar caravan led by the U.S. Palestinian Community Network blocked roads leading into O’Hare International Airport, according to news reports. WorkShe’s Still in Love With Her Little Island “I found that winter rentals are one of the few hidden gems of New Jersey,” she said. “The rent is reasonable, I’m still my mermaid by the beach, and the time when I’d have to move, I’d want to be up in Maine anyway.” WorkJN.1 Now Accounts for Nearly Half of U.S. Covid Cases JN.1 will most likely remain the dominant version of the coronavirus through spring, Dr. Schaffner said. He and other experts noted that while vaccines offer protection against it and other variants, uptake remains low, with only 18 percent of adults having received the latest shots. Experts said everyone should consider getting vaccinated, especially those who are over age 65, are immunocompromised, have health conditions that put them at higher risk of severe illness or are traveling to visit loved ones who may be vulnerable. WorkPowerful Realtors Group Loses Its Grip on the Industry “Most agents I talk to say if they had the choice to not be a member, they would choose not to,” Mr. Brohm said. “The sexual harassment allegations feel like the straw that broke the camel’s back, and a lot of people are now saying, ‘This is just insane.’” WorkWorkWorkWorkOpinion | Plagiarism Allegations Against Claudine Gay Nothing bothered my mentor and friend, the late historian Stan Kutler, more than plagiarists who claimed, after getting caught, that their stealing was an oversight, a little mistake, a slight error, a problem in checking content. No, they simply got caught. WorkJacques Delors, Passionate Architect of European Unity, Dies at 98 Toward the end of his tenure, Mr. Delors was increasingly perceived as arrogantly bent on strengthening the power of the European Union over its member states. Critics say the rise of a school of euroskeptic politicians in France, Britain and Denmark in the 1990s was a reaction to his overreach and a part of his legacy.
