John, this is the document that granted my great-great-great grandfather the right to vote in 1867. The significance of this is not lost on me – 146 years later, I’m running to become the first woman and person of color to represent Delaware in the Senate.
I carry the story of my ancestors with me every day. It means so much to me that my sister Thea made it into a scarf.
The day I was sworn-in, I carried that scarf.
It was surreal – knowing how far my family, and so many families of color, had come. All the way from being enslaved, to finally getting the right to vote, to being elected to represent the First State.
I also carried that scarf on the day of the January 6th insurrection. On such a dark day for our democracy, my scarf served as a reminder that every effort to undermine our democracy has been met with voices of power and reason.
And I intend to carry that scarf when I’m sworn in to the Senate.
