I’ve dedicated the last decade of my life to fighting the injustices that animals face in the agriculture industry, and in that time I’ve heard about every criticism these efforts can face. From arguments about how humans wither away on a vegan diet (I’ve been vegan for over 12 years and trust me, I eat a little too well most days) to every comedian who thinks “mmm, bacon” is a witty retort, there’s not much that phases me anymore. But there is still one comment that gets under my skin. To everyone who says “why do you do this work? It’s not like you’re going to make a difference anyway,” you’re wrong.

In my time at Animal Outlook, I’ve seen so many signs that things are getting better for animals. From the passing of Prop 12 in California and its historic defense in the United States Supreme Court, to the end of some of the cruelest widespread farming practices thanks to the hard work of our brave investigators and stellar legal advocacy team, to the explosion in popularity of vegan menu options, everywhere I look I see indications that things are only going to get better. But that doesn’t mean we don’t still have work to do.
Will you join me in continuing the fight to liberate farmed animals from lives of cruelty? A small group of amazing supporters has offered to match your gift, dollar for dollar, but only until December 31. Will you help us take advantage of this opportunity by making a small gift today?

So why do so many people think love and compassion will never win? I think the answer is rather simple. It’s because the truth is hard. It’s hard to look at the reality of suffering that our agricultural system imposes on animals. It’s hard to fathom the billions of animals that will be born, live, and die in that state of torture each year. And it’s hard to admit that if you participate in eating those animals, you bear some of the responsibility for their suffering. So it’s easier to just accept that nothing will ever change and the current system is the best we can do.

But you and I both know better. We’re able to see those animals as individuals worthy of love, compassion, and a life free from fear. We’re able to envision a world in which torture isn’t a part of daily life. And we’re willing to do what we need to in order to make that a reality.

So thank you. Thank you for seeing those animals for the beings they are. Thank you for using your voice to stand up for what you believe in. And thank you for supporting Animal Outlook in all the ways we’re striving to make a difference. We’re going to do this together.

With gratitude,

Warren Egersheim
Director of Development
