Dear Friends,

Since the horrific atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7, J Street
has shared the goals of holding perpetrators to account, returning
hostages to their families, and seeking to end Hamas’ control over Gaza.

But a growing chorus of senior American military officials are warning
that the Israeli government’s approach to the war in Gaza – pursued by
Netanyahu in defiance of President Biden’s warnings – presents a
catastrophic, unnecessary risk to civilian lives and Israel’s own goals of
releasing hostages, keeping Israelis safe and ultimately defeating Hamas.

I’m writing because we don’t yet have your name on our petition to
President Biden calling on the White House to use all US leverage to
achieve an immediate and significant shift in military strategy and
tactics.

It’s past time to end the massive aerial bombardments of Gaza in favor of
a far more targeted, focused counter-terror operation designed to keep
hostages safe, end Hamas’ control of Gaza, protect civilians, and hold the
perpetrators of October 7 to account.

The weeks since the end of the humanitarian pause in Gaza have been
immensely difficult. 

Since the horrific atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7, J Street
has stood firmly alongside Israelis in this time of immeasurable pain and
grief. We continue to share the goals of holding perpetrators to account,
returning hostages to their families, and seeking to end Hamas’ control
over Gaza.

Yet we’ve now watched for over two months as tragedy has built on tragedy.
After the relief of seeing hostages reunited with their families and a
reprieve in the bombing, we’ve seen a return to unfathomably distressing
scenes. 

Hostages waving white flags gunned down by friendly fire. Dozens more
young Israelis killed in battle. A return to high-intensity bombing.
Thousands upon thousands of Palestinian civilians killed and seriously
injured. Blockades fueling hunger and disease among more than a million
people forced to flee their homes. Families frantically searching for
brothers and sisters, children and parents, amid homes reduced to rubble. 

A growing chorus of senior American military officials are warning that
this continued approach – pursued by Netanyahu in defiance of President
Biden’s warnings – presents a catastrophic, unnecessary risk not only to
civilian lives, but to Israel’s own goals of releasing hostages, keeping
Israelis safe and ultimately defeating Hamas. 

We agree. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s continued disregard for President
Biden’s appeals over the conduct of this war runs against our values, and
against our common interests.

It’s past time to end the all-out military campaign and massive aerial
bombardments of Gaza in favor of a far more targeted, focused
counter-terror operation. For the sake of Israel’s long-term security,
regional stability – and protection of Israeli and Palestinian lives –
President Biden must marshal all US pressure to bear to make that happen.
