5 Reasons to Give in Support of Indigenous Peoples & the Planet

Dear Friend,

Indigenous Peoples are the most under-resourced group to receive philanthropic dollars, receiving less than half of one percent of total foundation dollars. We need support from donors like you to help us provide meaningful on-the-ground support to elevate Indigenous grassroots solutions and build a better world for all. Will you join us in making a lasting impact?

When you make a gift to Cultural Survival, it is an act of solidarity and activism, empowering Indigenous Peoples and their communities to create lasting positive change. If you have not made your end-of-year gift yet, here are 5 reasons why your support is crucial in driving positive change for Indigenous communities and the planet!

1. Indigenous women and youth are powerful changemakers capable of strengthening healthy families, communities, and the planet.
Indigenous women carry millenia-old traditional knowledge about the land and biodiversity that is embedded in their cultures and languages. This knowledge is passed down from one generation to the next, making Indigenous women the original storytellers and keepers of their traditions and oral history, and in turn providing young people with the power to shift the dynamics of the world. Your investment empowers Indigenous women and youth, creating a powerful ripple effect, uplifting entire communities, preserving traditional knowledge, and nurturing a resilient and empowered next generation.

2. Sustaining Indigenous wisdom creates a greener tomorrow. Indigenous communities hold critical solutions to climate change. Although Indigenous Peoples represent just 6.2% of the global population, they manage or hold tenure to over 25% of the world’s land surface and steward 80% of the world’s biodiversity. Your support enables the development and implementation of sustainable practices that not only mitigate the impacts of climate change but also preserve traditional ecological wisdom for the benefit of generations to come.

3. Protecting sacred spaces and sustainable livelihoods strengthens self-determination and provides climate benefits for all. Indigenous Peoples and their lands are inseparable. As Indigenous Peoples and their landscapes co-evolve together, they create a richness of biodiversity and cultures that sustains and preserves the wellbeing of Earth. Your support strengthens self-determination, land defense, and traditional resource management, essential for Indigenous Peoples to maintain traditional livelihoods and economies, which in turn provides climate and conservation benefits for all.

4. Protecting Indigenous Traditional Knowledge is key to protecting the land we live on. Supporting cultural and language diversity and revitalization directly supports biological diversity and conservation. As Indigenous Peoples speak more than 4,000 of the world’s remaining 7,000 languages, preserving culture and language directly impacts the preservation of the erosion of culture leads to the erosion of biodiversity, land, and soil. Your contribution preserves heritage for future generations and the land we live on.

5. Indigenous media amplifies voices, fostering connectivity and cultural continuity for communities. Indigenous-produced programming strengthens Indigenous Peoples’ capacity to claim their rights and enables access to essential information and broadcasting that ensures widespread understanding and cultural continuity. Your contribution supports freedom of expression, media training, and the use of technology to connect and empower Indigenous communities, critical for Indigenous communities to build awareness, reclaim the narrative and shift paradigms and agency.

When you make a gift to Cultural Survival, it is an act of solidarity and activism, empowering Indigenous Peoples to create lasting positive change for their communities and the planet. Please help us continue this important work for years to come!
