wanted to share this photo of me at my Bar Mitzvah when I was 13 years
old.

It’s easy to chuckle at this photo and see just how far fashion has
evolved since that classic 1970s bow tie — but it is also an opportunity
to tell you about how the guiding principles of my faith have guided me
through my life.

My family moved quite a bit during my school years. And when we finally
settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, we joined a reform synagogue with a
wonderful Rabbi. His sermons were different than I had experienced
elsewhere — they covered contemporary issues, and shed light on how Jewish
learning should inform our response to those challenges.

Guided by these sermons, and by other wonderful influences in my life like
my parents, my older brother and my public school teachers, I developed a
deep interest in history, philosophy and public service. We have a saying
that is part of a Jewish tradition — “Tikkun Olam,” or repairing the
world. I carry that beautiful idea with me each day in my work.

There’s a lot that’s been broken, and there’s a lot to fix, but I’m ready
to do my part to leave our state and country in a better place for future
generations. I’m committed to attacking the changing climate that is
ravaging the world, to repairing our broken democracy, and to advancing
peace, something more important than ever.
