Dear John,

WE ACT for Environmental Justice, with your support ([link removed]) , has had an unprecedented year of wins. Our organization has grown to 40 staff members. We’ve expanded our programs and strengthened our leadership in the environmental justice movement. As we prepare for 2024, we are celebrating our successes of 2023. Here are some highlights of 2023 that you helped make possible:
* Won passage of the New York State All Electric Buildings Act. This act mandates that new buildings are constructed to support electric heating and appliances, which is critical because nearly 70 percent of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings burning fossil fuels. This applies to most new buildings under seven stories beginning in 2026 and buildings over seven stories beginning in 2029.
* Strengthened our federal presence with our Federal Policy Office in Washington. With our DC presence, we continue to uplift our constituents’ concerns in meetings with federal agencies and Congressional policymakers. We have been building national coalitions among environmental justice organizations and allies, and we support the capacity and expertise of grassroots advocacy organizations so that they can engage on local issues with federal decision makers.
* Advanced our Justice40rward Campaign. Justice40rward forges collaboration between elected officials, municipalities, and those in environmental justice communities to ensure they are equipped to take advantage of the unprecedented federal funding opportunities presented by the Justice40 Initiative, which directs 40 percent of the benefits of federal climate action to these communities.
* Launched a capital campaign to develop our own Environmental Justice Center. Located in a brownstone in the heart of West Harlem, WE ACT’s Environmental Justice Center will soon serve as a headquarters for environmental justice leaders and advocates, and provide educational and advocacy programming for frontline communities across the country.
* Mobilized Northern Manhattan residents with our Civic Engagement team. Our Civic Engagement team continues to demonstrate the power of Northern Manhattan when organized to advocate on environmental justice issues. We secured over 14,000 voter pledges from Northern Manhattan residents last year, and our focus on passing New York’s $4-billion Environmental Bond Act received overwhelming support in the districts we serve, with 93 percent of Northern Manhattan votes on the Bond Act cast in its favor.

There is so much to celebrate for what we’ve done in 2023, but we cannot pause now. Our opponents are planning to rollback our progress in 2024. We need your help to start off the year strong and protect the progress we’ve made. We cannot afford to lose ground to polluters and the fossil fuel industry.

From now until December 31st, all gifts made to WE ACT will be matched dollar-for-dollar. Your impact will go twice as far to ensure that in 2024 we can continue to build on the wins of 2023 and make our vision of a healthier and greener future for our communities a reality. Just $50, $25, or even $10 goes a long way. Will you chip in today? ([link removed])
