With your support, we have been able to accomplish so much in 2023:
Protecting Civil Rights
Defeated “Alien Land Law” Proposals Targeting Iranian Americans: NIAC Action mobilized to defeat discriminatory legislation banning property purchases on the basis of national origin.
Stopped Efforts to Ban U.S. Travel to Iran: We halted proposals in Congress to criminalize travel to Iran.
Advancing Peace and Diplomacy
Mobilized for Ceasefire and to Prevent Regional War: We called for an immediate ceasefire on October 7th and have mobilized thousands of volunteers to meet with and send messages to their lawmakers calling for ceasefire.
Supported Diplomacy to Free Iranian Americans and Ensure Sanctions Don’t Block Humanitarian Goods for Iranians: We advocated for an important diplomatic and humanitarian breakthrough when many in Washington were working to undermine efforts to free Iranian-American hostages and to block funds from being made available for food and medicine for Iranians.
Building Political Power and Representation
NIAC Action Helped Elect Three Iranian-American Women in State and Local Elections: Atoosa Reaser (Virginia State Assembly), Mitra Jalali (St Paul Minnesota City Council), and Parisa Dehghani-Tafti (Virginia Attorney)!
NIAC Volunteer Leaders in 15 States Held Over 50 Meetings with Federal, State, and Local Lawmakers
NIAC Chapters Passed Norooz Resolutions in Cities and States Across the Country: NIAC volunteers helped pass resolutions in Colorado, Washington, Chicago, Santa Monica and more.
Supporting Equitable Immigration
Advocated for Iranian Refugees: Following our advocacy in the midst of nationwide protests, the Biden administration greatly increased refugee processing for Iranians at risk in March 2023.
Advocated for Iranian Students Stuck in Visa Limbo: We pressed the State Department to expedite visa processing for hundreds of Iranian students stuck in administrative backlog.
Standing with the Iranian People
Developed and Advanced Bipartisan Legislation in Solidarity with the Iranian People: In one of the first acts of the 117th Congress, the House passed legislation supported by NIAC endorsing internet freedom and targeted, not broad, sanctions. We have secured a bipartisan majority in support of the legislation in the Senate.
Advocated for Internet Freedom for Iranians: Following up on our successful efforts to ensure sanctions do not block satellite internet and other communications tools, we helped pass legislation to ensure private companies allow Iranians to access their services.
Spotlighted Human Rights Defenders in Iran: We published over 40 editions of NIAC’s Human Rights Tracker.
Combating Misinformation
Launched NIACTruth.org: We stood up to the disinformation campaign attempting to silence pro-peace Iranian Americans.
Published Unbiased News From Inside Iran: Iran Unfiltered is NIAC’s weekly digest for policymakers, journalists, and the public showcasing the latest updates on what is happening in Iranian news, politics and society.
Awarded the Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency: Given exclusively to nonprofits who have demonstrated transparency on areas of governance, program areas, and populations served and who publicly provide their audited financial data.
I am always in awe of what we are able to accomplish together, John. Please help us hit our year-end fundraising target so we can continue this vital work.
