I am reaching out to you, John, because I know you care about women’s rights. We are fighting right-wing extremism, not only here in the United States, but also globally.

Just look at Afghanistan. During the 20 years after the fall of the first Taliban regime, Afghan women made great progress. In August 2021, after the Taliban militarily took control of Afghanistan, the Taliban installed a Gender Apartheid system and again took every right from Afghan women and girls.

The Feminist Majority Foundation has been working for Afghan women and girls’ rights since 1997 and our work is now more important than ever. We are forming a coalition of organizations and individuals to petition the United States, the United Nations, and other countries to not recognize the Taliban regime as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.

The Taliban’s cruel regime of Gender Apartheid forbids women and girls:

* to be employed
* to go to school beyond the 6th grade
* to leave their homes without a male family member chaperone
* and the list goes on...

The Taliban has issued over 100 edicts taking away virtually all human rights from women and girls. According to the Taliban’s far-right “value system”, good girls and women stay home.

An Afghan woman expressed her despair: “I asked one Taliban officer, ‘What do I feed my children if I don’t earn?’ He said, ‘Give them poison, but don’t come outside your home.’ ”

Here in the U.S., we are also fighting a far-right “value system” from extremist politicians and those who believe women and girls should not have access to safe, modern reproductive health care. Women like Brittany Watts are being charged with felonies after a miscarriage. Women like Kate Cox are being denied the quest for an abortion to save their lives or health. In far too many states, the lives of women and girls simply don’t count.

Since the repeal of Roe vs. Wade, the extremists have been emboldened and violence has increased. We must expand our National Clinic Access Project and continue to help independent clinics that anti-abortion extremists are targeting. [[link removed]]

We are committed to expanding the National Clinic Access Project to help win state ballot measures for reproductive health and protect independent clinics. We are committed to stand shoulder-to-shoulder to fight Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan and everywhere. We will not rest until the ERA is finally enshrined into the United States Constitution.
