Dear Friend,

As the year draws to a close, we at the Green Party of Canada reflected on
our collective journey and the strides we've made together. Among our many
achievements, one stands out as a milestone not just for us, but for the
nation.

A HISTORIC STEP FORWARD: Green Party leader Elizabeth May introduced Bill
C-226 [1], the most significant environmental and social justice
legislation ever tabled in Parliament, to confront and address
environmental racism. This landmark bill, which cleared the House and won
its first vote in the Senate this year, mandates the development of a
national strategy to assess, prevent, and address environmental racism
while advancing environmental justice.

WHY THIS MATTERS: Bill C-226 is a game-changer. It acknowledges the
disproportionate impact of environmental hazards on Indigenous, racialized,
and marginalized communities and seeks to involve these communities in
environmental policy-making. This is a crucial step towards the inclusive,
just, and sustainable future that we believe in and fight for as Greens.

OTHER 2023 HIGHLIGHTS:

*

Deputy leader Jonathan Pedneault's statistical tie for second place in the
NDG-Westmount by-election, signaled our growing strength in Quebec.
*

MP Mike Morrice introduced a motion for a windfall tax on excess oil and
gas profits, garnering national media attention.
*

Kitchener Centre became the second constituency in Canada to boast Green
Party representation at both federal and provincial levels with the
landslide by-election victory of MPP Aislinn Clancy for the Ontario Greens.

*

Thousands of Green Party Members engaged in policy development through
wedecide.green.ca [2].
*

Elizabeth advocated strongly and tirelessly at COP28 for the final text to
include an agreement to phase out fossil fuels.
