John, back when I first decided to run for Congress, I knew it was going to be an uphill battle.

I knew that by championing what I believe in and being an unapologetic devotee to my community, I would become an easy target for extremist, far-right groups.

I also knew that as a Black woman, I was more likely to be overlooked and underestimated.

But as someone who grew up with “pre-existing condition” in my health care records, and as a registered nurse, I knew I had to do something to advocate for more accessible and affordable healthcare. So I ran.

And thanks to this incredible team, we won and made history as I became the youngest Black woman ever elected to Congress.

Now, I’m in Washington doing what you elected me to do, and I’ve had fourteen bills passed into law — including legislation that:

Makes
generic
insulin
available
more
quickly
to
consumers.
*
Lowers
the
costs
of
prescription
drugs.
*
Saves
millions
of
families
an
average
of
$2,400
per
year
for
their
health
care
coverage.
*
Improves
maternal
health
care
for
our
veterans.
*
Ensures
public
health
professionals
have
the
resources
they
need
to
respond
to
medical
emergencies
efficiently.
*
Supports
pregnant
women
in
the
workplace.

And the list goes on, John. I’m so proud of the progress we’ve made so far, but truly, the work has only begun.

There are still so many ways we could make life better for Illinois’ working families, and I’m hoping you’ll continue to stick by me and support the work I’m doing as I push for even more impactful legislation.
