Disqualifying Trump from the presidency is not a slippery slope. Ignoring our courts and the Constitution is. John, On Tuesday, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump's active involvement in the January 6, 2021 insurrection disqualifies him from seeking the presidency. He will not be allowed to appear on a ballot in that state, pending an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. In response, Republicans have offered a slippery slope argument that this ruling is somehow anti-democratic—and also, President Biden should be thrown off the ballot too! That’s not really an argument of course; any high school English student can tell you the ‘slippery slope’ is a logical fallacy meant to confuse and frighten. Here, the Colorado Supreme Court concluded that ignoring the law would be a miscarriage of justice. The justices ruled that ignoring the law would in fact be the slippery slope. Makes sense to me. The real issue at hand is adherence to the Constitution, which explicitly calls for the disqualification of an official who engages in insurrection or rebellion against the United States—a principle that transcends party lines. The fact that a state Supreme Court has ruled that the January 6th insurrection disqualifies Trump from the presidency is not a slippery slope. Ignoring our courts and the Constitution is.
