You know that global population growth is a monumental problem. Last year, we hit 8 billion people. We added one billion people to our planet in just a dozen years. Such rapid growth is unsustainable and worsens every other problem we face, whether it’s climate change, deforestation, biodiversity loss, water scarcity … the list goes on.
But just because the problem is huge, doesn’t mean we can overlook the small, simple steps to tackle it.
Did you know that girls who attend school are more likely to delay marriage and childbearing? Girls’ education and access to family planning options truly go hand-in-hand. These seemingly small solutions have an outsized impact on people’s lives and our world.
That’s one reason why we have been so fortunate to partner with organizations focusing on removing barriers to girls’ education. One of these is Girl Up Initiative Uganda.
Girl Up was founded in 2012 in Kampala, Uganda, by Monica Nyiraguhabwa and Kimberly Wolf. Girls and young women living in slum communities in Kampala have a vast unmet need for educational opportunities. Girl Up was created to help expand girls’ access to education and participation in the economy.
Girl Up’s flagship program, the Adolescent Girls Program (AGP), engages girls ages 9-15 in 30 partner schools throughout Uganda. Girls who participate acquire life and leadership skills and age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health education.
This program takes place during the academic year, helping girls build self-confidence and learn how to assert their rights in regard to their bodies, education, and futures. To date, nearly 8,000 girls have “graduated” from this innovative program, which represents just one initiative that this amazing organization offers.
