As we look back on 2023, it has been a year in which violent conflict seems to rear up everywhere on the map. Ukraine and Gaza dominated the headlines, but conflicts in Myanmar and Sudan, too, have killed thousands and displaced millions. Twenty years after the genocide in Darfur, Sudan’s military leaders have put the country on the brink of another calamity.

Dirty money is at the heart of the problem in many of these places, but for The Sentry, it is also part of the solution. Our investigative team follows the money connected to despotic regimes and war profiteers as it is laundered through the international financial system. Your support helps us uncover evidence of financial crimes and expose the people profiting from the pain of others. 

I’m proud to share The Sentry’s 2023 Impact Report, which highlights our 
key impacts from this year.

In response to the violence ravaging Sudan and Myanmar, The Sentry helped cut off major streams of conflict financing, depriving the junta in Myanmar and both sides of the conflict in Sudan of the funds needed to pay, arm, and supply their forces. 

And The Sentry’s investigations into the exploits of the Wagner Group in the Central African Republic revealed the group’s blueprint for state capture across the region. Our reporting, combined with a targeted advocacy campaign, helped kick start real efforts aimed at dismantling Wagner’s African network of cronies and front companies.
