Dear community of TLC supporters,
Thank you for all the ways you’ve shown up in 2023. I wanted to highlight just some of TLC’s important progress from this year. With the support of our donors, we:
Responded to 2,000+ requests for critical legal information through our Legal Helpdesk, with a third of those requests coming from trans community members who are incarcerated.
Sued the State of Texas to stop SB14 , the state’s unconstitutional medical care ban that endangers trans youth, infringes on the rights of parents, and threatens doctors.
Won our case challenging criminalization of self-defense : our client, a Black trans woman in Tennessee, was initially charged with second-degree murder when she fought for her life against the person who trafficked her into sex work—all charges dropped and record expunged.
Filed a new lawsuit in Tennessee challenging HIV criminalization , which disproportionately impacts trans people living with HIV.
Launched the groundbreaking Disabled & Deaf Trans People’s Survey the first of its kind created by and for disabled and Deaf trans people to fill longstanding gaps in research, in particular from trans BIPOC perspectives.
Launched our new Narrative Lab to train and support communications staff at frontline trans-led organizations across the country and to combat right-wing anti-trans messaging. |
