Hi John,

From everyone at Greenpeace, thank you so much for your support this year. It has helped to make a huge difference protecting our planet, wildlife and people. Thanks to you we can continue to investigate, document, lobby and take peaceful action to expose environmental abuse and champion solutions to defend our climate, oceans and forests for all life on Earth.

In this edition of your Greenpeace round up, we look back at the past year and also think about how we can start 2024 on the right foot.

Happy reading, and thanks again for making this all possible!

What you achieved this year: [link removed]

Our global movement is made up of millions of people - like you - who chose, one day, to act. Thanks so much for being with us. This year we have achieved so much together; from a global oceans treaty, to stopping Hyundai’s supply of diggers in the Amazon, to stopping the deep sea mining industry from getting the green light.

Whether you donated, signed a petition, knocked on doors, shared our campaigns or bought a t-shirt - you made this possible. By taking action, together we can do whatever it takes to create a green, fair and peaceful world.

2023: The year in photos blog: [link removed]

In 2023 Greenpeace confronted polluters, protested against deep sea mining, and worked to rid our food systems of deforestation.

The pictures featured here represent just a fraction of our activities and noteworthy moments. They fill us with hope for a more green and peaceful future. And they remind us that it’s our committed supporters, courageous volunteers, and dedicated activists that make any of this possible.

Greenpeace activists block Shell’s biggest port facility: [link removed]

Last month, in support of climate-impacted communities, activists on board the Rainbow Warrior III and Filipino climate activists on kayaks blocked access to the Shell import terminal in Batangas City, Philippines.

Twenty-nine activists, including Greenpeace Southeast Asia Executive Director Yeb Saño, closed in on two jetties from different locations, intending to affect the Shell’s import operations. This came as a Loss and Damage fund was tabled for discussion on the first day of COP 28, but with fossil fuel companies' accountability missing.

Greenpeace is calling on Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, as well as other world governments, to demand payment from giant fossil fuel companies like Shell for climate loss and damage.

Highlights from The 25 Mile Challenge: [link removed]

We were thrilled that over 1,000 people signed up to take part in our new 25 Mile Challenge this Autumn! The event was a brilliant opportunity to get active, whilst enjoying the spectacular autumnal leaves and helping to protect the planet at the same time.

Our participants each walked, ran, swam or wheeled 25 miles, through rain and shine, under sunrises and starry skies, across forests, mountains, beaches and parks - collectively raising an incredible £77,905!

Please take a moment to enjoy the heartwarming quotes from a few of our fundraisers below and stay tuned for other ways to get involved and support our work.

“I've loved the walk as autumn is my favourite time and I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed by the world recently. Getting outdoors into nature has really helped ground me.” - Samantha

“Thanks Greenpeace for organising this. It's a great way for members to join in, even if they can't get to demonstrations or other volunteering activities. It's something we can do right now on our doorstep, in our own time and at our own pace.” - Lisa

“It’s been a great reason to get my family out for some fresh air and feels amazing that we’re doing something positive to help the world at the same time.” - Ben

Greenpeace standing against the plastic pollution crisis at INC3: [link removed]

Last month we were at the third session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC3) for a Global Plastics Treaty. Thanks to you Greenpeace showed up stronger than ever before, and directly helped shift country positions and shape treaty text. After 7 days of intense negotiations, and lobbying both inside and outside the room, we achieved our primary political objective which was to keep alive the fight for a strong and ambitious treaty that includes a global target to massively reduce plastic production.

Find out what we asked for and see pictures and videos of the historic world event: [link removed]

While official outcomes from INC3 were limited, this meeting was a win for Greenpeace and the movement. We mobilised the countries most impacted and least responsible for the plastic pollution crisis, including small island states, the African region and SouthEast Asia, to stand strong and prevent less ambitious countries from trading away the most important elements of the treaty.

Greenpeace and our allies are not going to allow political expediency and fossil fuel interests to prevail over making the hard choices required to protect our climate, biodiversity and human health.

Watch a video of Natanya from Greenpeace Africa from behind the scenes and stay tuned for more updates on our campaign for a Global Plastics Treaty next year!

Your essential support allows us to be present at these negotiations to keep the pressure on. This work would not be possible without you.

Dove: stop poisoning our planet with plastic: [link removed]

We all know Dove. They’re more than just a soap brand. For decades, their ‘Real Beauty’ campaigns have sold us a vision of empowerment that confronted some of the world’s most toxic beauty trends. They’ve styled themselves as the champion of women and young girls.

But behind the scenes, Dove has been fuelling a human and environmental crisis by pumping huge volumes of toxic single use plastic out into the world.

Dove’s near impossible-to-recycle plastic sachets are wreaking havoc in the Global South, polluting neighbourhoods, choking rivers, and when burned, are leaching toxic chemicals into the air we breathe.

We took the message directly to Unilever HQ. A 10 ft Dove bottle artwork and powerful images of the brand’s plastic waste flanked the entrance to Unilever HQ: [link removed]

And now we need you to deliver the message to Dove. If enough people sign the open letter, they’ll have nowhere to hide; the whole world will read about their bad behaviour and Dove will be forced to address the issue publicly. Join the 75,000 supporters who have signed the open letter to keep the pressure on.

Greenpeace confronts deep sea mining ship in at-risk Pacific region: [link removed]

Greenpeace activists from Mexico, Argentina, Norway, South Korea, Poland and the UK peacefully confronted a ship doing deep sea mining exploration for The Metals Company (TMC), to denounce the imminent threat that this industry poses to the world’s oceans.

Under pouring rain and on board kayaks launched from Greenpeace ship the Arctic Sunrise, they paddled and protested around the offshore drilling vessel currently collecting data for TMC to file a mining permit.

The activists rotated to carry out a non-stop paddling activity that disrupted TMC’s plans from daybreak to sunset. They unfolded banners with the message “Stop Deep Sea Mining”.

Quick and meaningful actions

John, signing petitions is a great way to take action and make a difference. Please add your name and support our latest petitions because together we create real change.

1. Ban disposable vapes:

More than a million disposable vapes are thrown away every week in the UK. They’re littering our communities, leaking chemicals into the environment and endangering local wildlife. Add your name to tell the government to ban disposable vapes.

2. Fix the plastic waste crisis:

The government must act now to reduce single-use plastic, ban all waste exports and the building of new incinerators and finally roll out a deposit return scheme. Add your name to the list to demand real action.
