POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
Efforts are underway to collect signatures for a 2020 ballot initiative creating an East King County electric Public Utility District, which would cover areas including Kirkland, Bellevue, Kenmore, Issaquah, Snoqualmie, Woodinville, Redmond, Mercer Island, Sammamish, Duvall, Carnation and parts of Bothell. Please volunteer to help or learn more here! We now have quick and easy way for you to request and receive a signature gathering form to help us collect signatures. Click here to find out more!
Public Utility Districts (PUDs) are usually less expensive and choose to use less fossil fuels in their energy supply. For example, Puget Sound Energy who would be replaced, gets over 60% of their energy from fossil fuel sources while the Snohomish County PUD uses less than 5%.
And check it out: ditching for-profit, deceitful, recalcitrant, greenwashing Puget Sound Energy is a popular idea! Thurston County is also collecting signatures to put an electric PUD on the 2020 ballot—learn more here!
STOP THE MONEY PIPELINE
Behind every major fossil fuel project are the banks, insurance companies, asset managers, and institutional investors who fund, insure, and invest in them. These companies are propping up the Coastal GasLink pipeline that is threatening Wet'suwet'en territory, the Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline, Enbridge's Line 3 tar sands pipeline, and every other project that we are fighting. That's why here in Washington and around the country, we're teaming up to take on the biggest pipeline of all: the money pipeline.
The Stop the Money Pipeline campaign is building off of the years of campaigning led by 350 Seattle's Chase campaign and Mazaska Talks, both of which have inspired people across the country and the world to target financial institutions. Watch this webinar from last week to learn more about the Stop the Money Pipeline campaign and how you can get involved here in Seattle. Stay tuned for upcoming actions – including an opportunity coming up later this week!! It is guaranteed to be fun and easy and can be done from the comfort of your own home!!!
EARTH DAY CLIMATE STRIKE AND DAYS OF ACTION
On April 22, 1970 millions of people took to the streets for the first Earth Day. Their collective action led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and federal laws to protect our air and water. In the years since, Earth Day has become a standard—but the bold environmental action that resulted from the first Earth Day has not. With the 50th anniversary of Earth Day coming up, youth across the US are calling for Earth Day to once again catalyze far-reaching political and social change.
From April 22 to April 24, young people and adults across the United States will take to the streets to strike for climate justice—launching three consecutive days of action. Here in Seattle, we're supporting local youth climate leaders organizing the Earth Day 'deep strike' on April 22 that kicks off the wave of actions.
Want to jump in and help us organize in solidarity with youth strikers? Email Michael.
TACOMA LNG
Can you send a letter to Governor Jay Inslee’s staff asking that he direct the Department of Ecology to oversee the review of the Tacoma LNG fracked gas project?
The City of Tacoma failed to conduct any safety or public health analysis and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency based their recent permit decision on outdated science and fictional scenarios. The public deserves a full and credible review for such a large and dangerous facility.
You can also call Governor Inslee's office and ask the same thing! (360) 902-4111.
Need more inspiration? Check out this video from when Protectors of the Salish Sea visited Ecology on a prayer walk last September.
NETSE MOT FOR XW’ULLEMY
Previously scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at the Capitol Steps in Olympia, the Netse Mot event has been postponed. Check for details at Sacred Sea: For a Living Salish Sea.
To volunteer to support the event when it’s been rescheduled, contact Hogan.
PULL TOGETHER
In the movement to protect our climate and communities from the Trans Mountain pipeline and tanker project, three indigenous Nations— Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish and Coldwater— have launched legal challenges that may have the best shot at stopping this project in its tracks. The Wellhead to Tidewater webinar series includes some of the most committed leaders in the movement for a safe climate and an oil-free future.
Wellhead to Tidewater: Joining Forces Against TMX
Recordings available here.
Learn how you can join forces with indigenous leaders, legal experts, and youth activists to stop the Trans Mountain pipeline and build power from Canada’s tar sands to the tanker terminals in the Salish Sea and through Cascadia to San Francisco Bay.
