One movie keeps coming to mind this holiday season — and not just because I’ve got a walking, barking, four-legged reminder of it at home.
Bruce and I named our dog Bailey after George Bailey, the community banker in It’s A Wonderful Life. He was decent, he was determined, and, most of all, he saw the best in people. I always thought his role was written for a golden retriever, although Jimmy Stewart did a nice job with it. We had hoped that our Bailey would be as kind and loyal as the fictional George Bailey — and that he would also stand up to Big Bank executives just like his namesake, but we know that dogs can only do so much.
And when I think about George Bailey’s big-hearted grit, I think about all the Americans who dig deep every day to take care of the people they love and strengthen our communities. Everyone who’s taking two buses to their second job. Everyone who’s taking time this holiday season to volunteer at a food bank. Everyone who’s squaring their shoulders, clearing their throats, and speaking out to insist that our nation live up to its best values.
I’m grateful for them — and I’m grateful for you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this team stronger. And thank you for channeling your inner George Bailey (let’s keep an eye out for any Mr. Potters).
Bruce, Bailey, and I are wishing you and your loved ones a happy, healthy, wonderful holiday season.
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
