Handwriting - Merry Christmas to you all and a Happy New Year when it comes

A Personal Message to Residents in the Carlisle Constituency

Firstly Happy Christmas. I hope that you and your families have a restful festive period and enjoy time with those you hold most dear.

As we move quickly towards the end of another busy year, both here in Carlisle and down in Westminster, I reflect on the year that is drawing to a close.

It is fair to say that we have had our fair share of challenges but Carlisle has seen another year of significant progress.

We have seen record levels of investment in our city, from both the public and the private sector. We have seen the creation of Cumberland Council, bringing all local Government services together under one roof. Progress has been madeé on our infrastructure with an additional £80m of Government funding (taking the total from the Government to over £220m) for the Southern Link Road. Work has now Started in earnest here and at the Carlisle Railway Station, where £20m of Borderlands funding has kickstarted the regeneration of the gateway to our city. We have also seen investment in education and in our local NHS. Work continues on the move of the University of Cumbria to the iconic Citadels and the creation of the first University Medical school.

As always, there is still more work to do. I will continue to champion Carlisle in Parliament and stand up for our area, ensuring that progress continues.

My priorities have always included building a strong local economy with businesses across a number of sectors that support our local communities. More and better jobs with a local skilled workforce able to gain access to these jobs and progress on a career path in the future. This includes our young people as we encourage more to stay in the city and shape the city of tomorrow. That’s why my 9th annual skills fair was so important so that we can bring together business, training providers with young people and those seeking work. This year also saw my third nuclear conference, exploring the opportunities and developments the nuclear industry can bring to our city and wider Cumbria.

Please continue to share your issues with me. I have enjoyed meeting many of you, through visits, surgeries and just knocking on doors. If I haven’t met you yet, I hope to do so in 2024.

Best wishes for the new year, when it comes.

John Stevenson
