The Gentle Donkey

Donkeys are beasts of burden,
Built to carry heavy loads.
They travel very carefully,
Along old and dusty roads.

He doesn’t spook or stumble,
More sure-footed than a horse.
His demeanor remains humble,
As he travels out his course.

Jesus rode on a donkey,
In his mother Mary’s womb.
And, in triumphal entry,
Before going to His tomb.

A donkey shared his manger
With the babe from above.
That kept Him out of danger,
For He was the great beloved.

Humble is his label,
A servant heart for sure,
To do his master’s bidding,
His purposes were pure.

Jesus chose an unbroke colt
To make his final ride,
Up the Temple Mount he rode,
The colt took it all in stride.

Tall horses were for warfare,
Small donkeys were for peace.
Heroes rode proud horses,
A donkey bore, the “Prince of Peace.”

A special place in heaven
Is reserved for such creatures.
They will romp upon the clouds,
Giving rides into the future.

Donkeys have a chosen place,
In the eyes of The Almighty.
They were there at Jesus’ birth,
And, on His way to Calvary.

Jesus will come back in victory
Upon a flashy, white horse.
But to get to heaven humbly,
He rode a gentle donkey first.

This Christmas time remember,
As you see the needy pass,
Jesus gives grace to the humble
Even if they are an ass.
